History volunteers sought

The Peachtree City Oral History Committee would like to plan a meeting of volunteers interested in helping to preserve Peachtree City’s “living history.”

This group has started a process to interview, on audiotape, key members of the community in order to capture their stories as part of the history and tradition of Peachtree City. The effort began more than a year ago and has already captured interviews with six of the seven former mayors of Peachtree City, as well as one of the most senior clergymen. Former mayor Howard Morgan passed away before an interview could be arranged.

The ongoing effort seeks to interview more clergy, business and civic leaders and other citizens who have played roles in the city’s history. The resulting tapes, along with written transcripts, will be kept on file at the city library to provide reference materials.

“I am thrilled about this program,” said Gerri Holt, chairwoman of the Peachtree City Historical Society. The Society was formed more than two years ago to begin work in preserving this young city’s heritage. The oral history program is the first phase of this effort.

“We are entering into an exciting moment in Peachtree City history. We are beginning to record our history as we live it,” said Holt.

There is still a need for interviewers, committee officers, transcriptionists and other key positions to assist in building the oral history library. Anyone interested in being involved should contact Gerri Holt at 770-487-1826. A meeting date will be set after sufficient response has been received.
