It was very fitting to have a tea honoring “Gone With the Wind” and its famous author, Margaret Mitchell, at Southern Oaks in Fayetteville. Mitchell lived in the area and based many of the characters in her epic novel on her family members and friends.

The 24 women who attend the recent tea heard all about Mitchell, the novel and the film from local author Victoria Wilcox, who is a frequent speaker at the Margaret Mitchell House and is an expert on both Mitchell and Doc Holliday.

The guests were invited to dress in period costumes and hats while they took tea and listened to Wilcox’s presentation. Southern Oaks was decked out in magnolias and gardenias to give it a very Southern feel, despite very unsouthernly cold weather outside. In addition to the presentation, there was a lot of “Gone With the Wind Memorabilia” on display from Barbara Rowland’s collection. The memorabilia included dolls, books and photos among other things.

The menu for the tea was also themed for the famous story. It included “It ain't fittin’” chicken salad in pastry shells; “Frankly my dear, I don't give a yam” biscuits with “Aunt Pitty Pats” of butter; “Rhett, you devil”ed eggs; “I don't know nuthin’ ‘bout birthin’ no baby” carrots and celery with ”Bonnie Blue” cheese dip; “Fiddle-de-pe”can tassies; and “Those damn yank-key” lime bars.

As souvenirs of the tea, guests could their picture taken with a Scarlett O’Hara lookalike in the famous dress made from the green velvet drapes of Tara and they could also take home gold doilies with scenes from the film on them.

The next scheduled tea at Southern Oaks is “Heirlooms from the Hearts” Feb. 6. Guests are encouraged to bring in cherished heirlooms to show and discuss with other guests. Phone 770-460-0890 or visit www.victorianadventures.com for more information or reservations.
