Leapin’ Lizards, ‘Annie’ returns to the Fox

“The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile” are not chapter titles from a self-help book, but rather lyrics to some of the most famous songs from “Annie,” one of the most beloved Broadway musicals of all time.

The show, which has been popular in every incarnation from community theatre to major motion picture, returns this week for performances at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.

The story focuses on Annie, a red headed orphan who dreams of finding her parents and escaping the evil clutches of Miss Hannigan, the boozy owner of the orphanage. Annie is the well-respected leader of the girls at the orphanage and befriends nearly everyone she meets. This continues when she spends the holidays with billionaire Daddy Warbucks and also gets a chance to meet President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. When Warbucks expresses his wishes to adopt Annie, Hannigan and her brother, Rooster, cook up an evil plan to get rid of Annie and take some of Warbucks’ cash. Will they succeed? You’ll have to see the show to find out.

“Annie” is based on the comic strip “Little Orphan Annie,” which was created in 1924. The show opened on Broadway in 1977, won seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score, and ran for 2,377 performances. While many members of this production tour the country, many of the girls in the orphan chorus are from the Atlanta area. The show will be directed by Martin Charnin, the lyricist of the show and the director of the first Broadway production of “Annie,” as well as five national tours of the show and the London production.

“Annie” will run Jan. 14-18 at the Fox Theatre. Performances are at 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday with matinee performances at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and a special evening performance at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $20-$54 and are available at any Ticketmaster outlet, the Fox Theatre box office or by calling 404-817-8700.
