In search of peace

By REV. KNOX HERNDON
Pastor

My wonderful wife ran across a “Focus on the Family” article I would like to share with you.

“Kitty Kok was only 6 years old when she was imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp in Indonesia during World War II. She experienced hunger, loneliness and fear. During her four-year stay, her world was transformed from innocence to the dark knowledge of human suffering and man's inhumanity to man. There was no peace in her wounded heart.

“But when Kitty was 11, she had a dream. She was lost in a forest. Through the darkness came a robed man surrounded by light. His eyes were gentle. ‘Do not be afraid,’ he said as he took her hand. ‘I will lead you out of the forest.’

“Years later, as an adult, Kitty remembered that dream. Depression had overtaken her and she suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. Her healing took years; her heart was raw, her sleep full of nightmares. Yet she clung to that dream. ‘Do not be afraid, I will lead you out of the forest.’ Through friendships, counseling and Scripture, God led her to a place of peace.

“No matter what your circumstance, the Author of peace can lead you through any dark forest.”

God’s word says, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. I do not give as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 13:27).”

In all of the scriptures, Jesus said, more than any other statement, “Be not afraid.”

As we go into this New Year, may we look to make it a Christ-filled New Year as “that peace that passes all understanding.” That is the only real true joy and peace in life anyway. Also remember that God’s Word calls our life situations “seasons.” I like that because it is not only very true, but well-put. Thank you, God!

Our soldiers are still stationed around the world. Some will suffer post traumatic stress distress disorder when they return and some my never return. The spiritual truth still remains from God’s Word which tells us to “resist evil and do good.” In another place it tells us to “be about His business” until He returns. Come quickly, Lord Jesus! Peace, God’s Peace!
