Line Creek seeks volunteers to clear trails

Nature lovers in Fayette and Coweta County are invited to the Line Creek Nature Area in Peachtree City this Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. to mark and clear trails. Line Creek forms the border between the two counties.

Southern Conservation Trust is sponsoring the work party at the city-owned nature area, which is located off Georgia Hwy 54 at McDuff Parkway, adjacent to Planterra Ridge. The 70 acre preserve, managed by SCT, includes a fishing pond with a dock constructed by the Fayette County Rotary Club and several miles of both easy and challenging trails. Boy Scout troops have installed an information kiosk, picnic tables, benches and bridges on the trails.

Volunteers will cut weeds and small brush blocking trails and scenic overlooks and install color-coded markers to make the trails more visible and accessible. The September 2003 work party drew several dozen adults and teenagers.

“The trails at Line Creek offer scenic views of the stream, rock shoals and a forested ridge line. Clearing and identifying the easy and more challenging trail sections will help more people enjoy this great natural park” said SCT Executive Director Abby Jordan.

Southern Conservation Trust is a 10-year Peachtree City-based nonprofit organization that owns and manages over 600 acres of environmentally sensitive land in Fayette County. SCT enhances its holdings with trails, overlooks and re-introduction of native species and also hosts environmental programs at the Flat Creek Nature Area. As a regional land trust SCT works with willing landowners to provide options for protecting scenic open space that benefit the greater community and can offer tax advantages for the landowner.

Work party participants are asked to bring work gloves and wear sturdy shoes. Shovels and loppers will come in handy too. Volunteers should check in at 1 p.m. at the Nature Area parking lot, accessible by a gravel drive off the Days Inn parking lot.
