The award was announced at the Atlanta Track Clubs annual Cross Country Awards Night Dec. 2. Ray Broadaway, the director of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association, has also nominated Thorn for the National High School Coaches Associations Coach of the Year and the National Coaches Federation's Coach of the Year awards. Thorn has coached boys track for 36 years, with 29 years as head coach. He coached at Georgia Military Academy 1955-1959, Headland High School 1959-1969, Colonial Hills Christian School 1981-1987, Fayette Christian School 1987-1988, and Landmark Christian School 1989-present. His teams have won 25 region championships, 8 state runners-up, and 18 state championships. He has coached 63 individual state champions. Thorn has received 23 region Coach of the Year awards, 16 Atlanta Track Club Coach of the Year awards, and 8 state Coach of the Year awards. Landmark Christian School headmaster Matt Skinner admires Coach Thorn for his consistent dedication to making a difference in the lives of young people. Coach Thorn is a great role model and mentor for our Landmark kids, said Skinner. We are proud of all he has accomplished. When Thorn speaks of his 73 years on earth, he says that he is thankful to have had the opportunity to coach so many fine young men and ladies. He is grateful for the support of his wife, Patty, over their near-fifty years of marriage. While he is also grateful for the recognition that he has received as a coach, Thorn remains humble and keeps things in Christian perspective, saying, If I have rightly served God, my rewards and treasures will have been stored in heaven.
