Former Riverdale officer gets probation in park exposure case

A former Riverdale Police captain has pled no contest to reduced charges stemming from an altercation that ensued when he urinated in public at Dixieland Fun Park back in September.

Carl Freeman, 48, who is no longer on the force, was sentenced by Fayette State Court Judge Fletcher Sams to a year on probation, 20 hours of community service and a $100 fine. Freeman pled no contest Monday to disorderly conduct, and prosecutors dropped other charges of public indecency, simple assault, disorderly conduct and criminal trespassing.

Police said Freeman threatened the park owner who confronted him after Freeman was seen urinating in a lake at the park.

State Court Solicitor Steve Harris said the punishment was appropriate, particularly since the incident led to Freeman’s dismissal from his job at the Riverdale Police Department.

The no contest plea is not technically a conviction, but it can be considered as evidence by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, which governs the certification of police officers in Georgia, Harris said.
