Library Commission gets bond referendum for library expansion passed

The Peachtree City Library Commission had one major focus in 2003: Getting a bond referendum to pay for an expansion to the library. Board members got what they wanted as the citizens of Peachtree City narrowly approved the referendum 2,476 to 2,400. Work has already begun on the design process and getting the bonds ready for sale.

In March, the idea was a small but noble one. They wanted a larger children’s area, which would then give more space for a larger adult area. They estimated a 5,000 square foot addition would do the job. When they approved the hire of the Leo Daly Company to take a look and give an estimation of what the job would entail, over 6,000 more square feet were added, as were ideas for a new entrance, better lighting and sight lines, larger children’s and adult sections, repairs to the roof and heating system and getting the library aisles up to Americans with Disability Act standards. The cost of the project was estimated to be $4.9 million and the cost per family was estimated to be $25 a year, based on an average home estimate of $200,000.

Citizens are encouraged to attend the next meeting of the library commission Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. in the meeting room of the library. Representatives from Leo Daly will be on hand and would like more public input of what is needed in the project. A time-line of the project will be available at the meeting. It is currently estimated that construction could begin in the summer of 2004 with the project due to be completed in the fall of 2005.
