Looking ahead — 2004 promises a full year of local entertainment

It does not take a crystal ball to tell the future. One must only look to the past to see that history often repeats itself. It also wouldn’t hurt to have a good Internet connection and a big list of favorites bookmarked.

The past year gave the Southern Crescent lots of fun events to view and participate in (see story above), and 2004 will be no different. If anything, 2004 could be bigger and better than ever.

The local theater scene will be hopping in 2004 with many of the local companies offering up some old classics as well as some newer, lesser known shows. Fayette Players is rumored to be doing “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” over the summer, while Offshoot Productions will offer a two-day St. Patrick’s Day festival early in March and a production of Shakespeare’s “A Comedy of Errors” at the Villages Amphitheater in June. Newnan Community Theatre has a full slate in 2004 offering “Steel Magnolias,” “The Miracle Worker,” “The Boys Next Door” and “The Crucible,” as well as “Della’s Diner,” “Love, Sex and the I.R.S.,” “Art,” “The Hobbit,” and “Schoolhouse Rock Live.” Southside Theatre Guild will present “God’s Man in Texas,” “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Keeping Dixie.” Fayette Coweta Family Theatre will present “Thumbelina,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “The Enchanted Sleeping Beauty.”

Now that Fayette County has two concert venues, music will fill the air in 2004. The Villages Amphitheater in Fayetteville will present Three Dog Night, The Oak Ridge Boys, Ronnie Milsap, Neil Sedaka, The Swingin’ Medallions and a special guest, yet to be announced. The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater has not announced their 2004 lineup, but rumor has it that some of the most popular acts of the last 10 years will be returning to “The Fred” this summer. They will also most likely offer another jazz series over the summer and will most likely host U-Night 17 once again next fall.

While all of these concerts and plays are great, life in Fayette County just wouldn’t be the same without the festivals and fairs that run throughout the year. Residents can always count on events like the Old Courthouse Art Show, July Jam, Taste of Fayette, Shakerag, Tyrone Founders Day, Old Campbell County Days, The Great Georgia Air Show, the Pumpkin Walk, the Kiwanis Fair, and, of course, the great Fourth of July activities. In the not too distant future will be a country and bluegrass concert at Sams Auditorium to benefit the Fayette County High School select chorus and the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast in Peachtree City.

There will be lots more going on in the area this year and you’ll know all about it as long as you keep reading this section of The Citizen.

Here’s to a great 2004!
