Holiday tournaments keep players busy

While many high school students take a complete break from school-related activities during the Christmas break, some local basketball teams are getting in a little extra game action during one or both weeks of the time away from classes.

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers took part in Woodward Academy’s tournament just before Christmas and came away with a 2-1 record and a third-place finish. Play began with a 50-16 win over Lovett, as Ashley Marine scored 18 points and the team held Lovett to only three second-half points.

The second round saw the Lady Panthers suffer a 48-30 loss to Woodward, but the team bounced back with a 41-37 win over Kennesaw Mountain. Three Starr’s Mill players reached double figures in that game: Marine with 13, Angela Garza with 12 and Jenny Norman with 11. Leading rebounders were Garza (9) and Marine (8).

“The Kennesaw Mountain game was probably the best team game we have had all

year,” said head coach Whitt Jones, whose team shut down Kennesaw Mountain’s two 6-foot-3 post players. “We played great defense and did a good job on the boards.”

The Lady Panthers are back on the court this week in a tournament at Salem High in Rockdale County. They won their first game Saturday, 46-40 over Heritage. Marine hit five three-pointers on her way to a 16-point effort, while Katie Jacobsen scored 11, including three baskets from three-point range. Norman scored 10 and blocked three shots.

Starr’s Mill sent its boys team to Salem this week as well, with the Panthers losing the opener 63-46 to Heritage Saturday. Caleb Graham scored 14, Andy Drum added 12 and Mike Mock had 11.

Monday’s game was a 58-51 win over Towers, where the Panthers broke open a 17-17 game with a 15-0 run and eventually took a 19-point lead on their way to victory. Graham scored 25 in that game.

The War Eagles of Landmark Christian have spent the days since Christmas in Myrtle Beach at the Beach Ball Classic, which featured some of the top players and teams from a dozen states across the country. Landmark lost its opener Friday to Archbishop Spalding of Maryland by a 62-55 score. Randolph Morris scored 21 with 12 rebounds and Justin Holland added 13.

Saturday saw the team drop a 63-58 decision to Camden County of South Carolina. Morris was the only War Eagle in double figures with 30 points.

Landmark pulled out a 71-69 overtime win Monday over Socastee of South Carolina. Morris led the way with 22, while Trey Souder scored 17 and Holland added 13.

Landmark is now 8-3 on the season.
