Deadline set for playground funding

The Luther T. Holt Memorial All Children’s Playground Committee has set April 15 as the last day for people to donate toward the third and final phase of the totally accessible playground in Peachtree City.

As the committee closes in on the fundraising goal of $50,000 for Phase III of the playground, members decided to establish the deadline so planning could begin for installation of the final phase.

“We want to make this final push to reach our $50,000 goal,” said Colleen Sugar, who has chaired the committee since its inception four years ago. “The playground only lacks a few important elements to be complete. This deadline will give us time to get the final elements in this summer.”

The target month for installation is June 2004, according to Randy Gaddo, director of leisure services. “When the fund raising drive ends April 15, we’ll see how much money we have and place the final order based on that amount,” he said.

Gaddo added that the Committee has thus far raised about $30,000 toward the final goal. If the $50,000 goal is met, the playground will have cost a total of $150,000. Two earlier phases each cost $50,000 apiece.

“We are forever grateful to those individuals, families, businesses and civic clubs who have helped us get this far,” said Sugar. “Our hope is that the community will rally and help us get to this final goal.”

The final phase will feature swings, additional ramping to create better flow through the facility, equipment for very young children and even a small water feature for those hot summer days.

“It's been a long, hard road for these volunteers over the past four years,” Gaddo recalled. “They’ve stuck to their guns and kept driving towards this final goal. Colleen and her crew have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make this dream reality.”

The playground’s namesake, the late Luther T. Holt, devoted his life to recreation and youth. He was a long-standing member of the Recreation Commission here, and the Commission's liaison to the playground committee, when he died three years ago this month.

“Luther would be proud, very proud, to see what he helped create,” Gaddo said.
