Panthers fall to Woodward in pool

The Starr’s Mill swim team suffered its first meet loss of the season Dec. 11 against Woodward Academy.  Missing most of their top swimmers due to the Georgia Short Course State Championships, as well as not having a dive team to also compete, proved too much for the Panthers.  The final score was 421-144.

Nevertheless, there were some good swims. Junior Noah Copeland finished first in both of his events, the 200 and 500 yard freestyle. Junior Heather Highsmith placed second in both the 200 and 500 free as well.  Freshman Bailey Garrot was second in the 200 individual medley. Senior Haynes Finney was third in both the 100 butterfly and the 100 backstroke. Senior Bob Wethington placed third in the 200 IM.

All of the boys relay teams placed third:  Copeland, Wethington, Finney and senior Brandon Watkins in the 200 medley relay; Watkins, Wethington, senior Dustin Martin and senior Thomas Barger in the 200 free relay; and Finney, Barger, Martin and Copeland in the 400 free relay.

On the girls side, the 200 free relay team of sophomore Kelsey Surratt, junior Hannah Sargeant, sophomore Alyson Simonsen and Highsmith placed third. Highsmith, senior Jamie Grace, senior Libby Hardison and Garrot placed third also in the 400 free relay.

The Panthers will be off until after the holidays. The next meet will be Jan. 9 when Starr’s Mill competes against Fayette County at Kedron.
