Smells of Christmas make good sense

No matter who you are, you’re likely to associate certain aromas with the good memories of Christmases past. Don’t overlook this powerful way of recalling the good times of the holidays, even if you are alone or don’t take the time to decorate.

Pine, cinnamon, oranges, cloves, nutmeg — they all contribute to the magic of the season. Consider using potpourri or a large container of pine boughs.

Even better, make your own Christmas scents. Put two or three cinnamon sticks in a saucepan, along with some orange peels, a pinch of cloves, and perhaps a sprinkle of nutmeg. Add several cups of water and bring it to a boil, then simmer on top of your stove. This will produce a wonderful, steamy “flavor” for the entire atmosphere of your home. It will also add warmth (and humidity) to the experience.

Now turn on some holiday music, sit down with a hot cup of tea, sample some of your favorite cookies, close your eyes, inhale slowly and enjoy.
