Council approves solid waste program

The Fayetteville City Council has signed off on the latest version of its solid waste short term work program.

The document, a written list of goals for all municipalities and Fayette County to reduce solid waste headed to landfills, was approved by the council at its regular meeting last week.

Prior to city approval, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and the Atlanta Regional Commission reviewed the plan. The comments back from those agencies indicated that a letter was needed assuring the city landfill capacity for the next 10 years.

That letter has been provided already, according to a memo from City Engineer Don Easterbrook.

The city currently has a voluntary recycling program which all city residents pay for with their trash bills. In 2001, recycling bins were placed in McCurry Park on McDonough Road and Kiwanis Park on Redwine Road. Both facilities are owned by the county.

The Fayette County office of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service maintains a web page that points residents to local recycling centers for a variety of waste. The page is located at: www.admin.co.fayette.ga.us/extension/recycling/index.asp.

The web site may also be accessed from a drop-down menu on the county’s Web site: www.admin.co.fayette.ga.us.
