The Fayetteville City Council has committed to relocating utilities along Ga. Highway 85 south when the road is eventually widened by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The widening project, which would be from Grady Avenue and Bernhard Road is scheduled for the 2011 to 2015 time frame in the county’s transportation plan. The cost is estimated currently at $175,000 but city officials plan on the cost being higher by the time the project comes to fruition.

Much of the widening will be in the county’s jurisdiction and so the county commission will be responsible for funding those utility relocations.

The overall estimated cost for widening the 5.7-mile segment is roughly $8 million.

The city council agreed unanimously to enter the agreement with the DOT at its regular meeting last week.
