Former Chief hoopster contributing at Clayton State

Former McIntosh basketball standout Stephen Cox is expected to add versatility to Clayton State College and University’s Laker basketball team this year.

Cox, a 6’8” senior, helped the team to a 17-12 record last season and is one of seven lettermen returning from last year as the team began play in the Peach Belt Conference this weekend.

Head Coach Gordon Gibbons said the team expected big things from him this season.

“He is our hardest worker and his improvement has been dramatic,” Gibbons said. “He can play several positions and is an outstanding shooter and fundamentally sound. He has added 10 pounds of muscle and has made himself an inside scorer as well.”

Last year, Cox played in 19 games and had a season-high six rebounds against NCAA Division II Tournament team Alderson-Broaddus.

Prior to transferring to Clayton State, Cox played at Middle Georgia College, helping the team reach the Georgia Junior College state championship game in 2001. He also placed in the top 20 in scoring in NJCAA Region 16.

Cox, a marketing major, is the son of Steve and Ellen Cox of Peachtree City.
