Heritage Christian Church invites public to travel to Dickens Village

When reading Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” one feels that he or she is on the cobblestone streets of London in the late 19th century during Christmas. People will get to see it up close and personal this week when the Dickens Village at Heritage Christian Church in Fayetteville opens.

The sights, smells and sounds will bring the public back in time and get them in the Christmas spirit, without sending three ghostly visitors to their homes. Visitors can peruse shops selling everything from candy, candles and Christmas trees to music boxes, woodworkings and assorted curiosities. There will also be carolers, storytellers, a live manger scene, beverages and refreshments and much more. New to the Dickens Village this year is the Royal Theatre and a petting zoo.

It takes a lot of man hours to get the Dickens Village up and running each year. Over 450 members of the church play a part in the process, either helping with the crew or participating as part of the cast. This is the third year of the Dickens Village and organizers estimate close to 6,000 people will visit this year. Special nightly events this year include the Oak Grove Elementary and Peeples Elementary choruses on Wednesday night, Braelinn Elementary and East Fayette Elementary on Thursday night and performances of “Because It’s Christmas” on Friday-Sunday.

The Dickens Village will be open from 5:30-9 p.m. nightly, Dec. 10-14. Heritage Christian Church is located at 2130 Redwine Rd. in Fayetteville. Phone 770-716-5768 or visit www.dickenshcc.com for more information.
