Several area high school swim teams had excellent showings in the pool over the past week. The McIntosh team traveled to Carrollton and participated in the Carrollton Holiday Invitational last weekend, placing second overall. The boys finished first and the girls finished third. Chris Lee placed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle, with Andrew Morton finishing third in the 50 free. Thomas Lucak was first in the backstroke. Nicole Roddenbery placed first in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. Tiffany Grant and Hannah Williams finished eighth and ninth in the 50 free. All relay teams improved their times, and the 400 free relay team qualified for state with a time of 3:37.38. Relay team members are Thomas Lucak, Bryan Mitchell, Jeb Beard, and Chris Lee. The team competes Friday against Sandy Creek and Whitewater and will travel to Doraville Saturday to take on Galloway. The Starrs Mill team enjoyed a big victory Friday against Sandy Creek and Whitewater, winning 18 out of 22 events. The final score was Starrs Mill 203 points, Sandy Creek 81 and Whitewater 41. There was one new Starrs Mill record broken and four more state qualifying swims. Freshman Lauren Cartwright broke the 100-yard freestyle record swimming a 57.13. This is also a state qualifying time. She also won the 200 IM (2:17.00). Senior Brittany Stevens and freshman Mackenzie Garrot both swam state cut times in the 50 free (25.78 and 26.26). Stevens also won the 100 butterfly (1:01.25) and Garrot the 100 breast (1:12.09). Junior Noah Copeland added to his state qualifying swims in the 200 free (1:55.47). He also placed first in the 500 free (5:07.11). Other first-place individual finishers were junior Heather Highsmith (200 free, 217.66); sophomore Scott Adams (200 IM, 2:25.43); senior Brandon Watkins (50 free, 25.75); senior Paul Daniel (100 free, 59.35) and sophomore Georgia Highsmith (100 back, 1:06.77). All Starrs Mill relay teams finished first. The 200 medley relay team of G. Highsmith, Garrot, Stevens and Cartwright bettered its record-setting time from the last meet, swimming a 1:56.02. The boys 200 medley relay team of Adams, junior Kris Pretzer, senior Bob Wethington and senior Brandon Watkins also placed first (1:55.12). Other winners were Pretzer, Wethington, senior Dustin Martin and Copeland (200 free relay, 1:43.24); Cartwright, Garrot, sophomore Kelsey Surrat and Stevens (200 free relay, 1:48.50, state qualifying time); Adams, Watkins, Daniel and Copeland (400 free relay, 3:48.05); G. Highsmith, senior Libby Hardison, Surratt and H. Highsmith (400 free relay, 4:19.81). Other swimmers with at least a third-place finish were junior Robert Hawkins, junior Bradley Morris, senior Thomas Barger, freshman Johanna Siri, freshman Bailey Garrot, sophomore Alyson Simonsen, senior Jamie Grace, freshman Hanna Tompkins, sophomore Winston Frederick, senior Steven Bonecutter, freshman Nathan Raymond, sophomore Michael Burmeister, sophomore Sloane Davidson, freshman Kelly Wenrick, freshman Luke Ediger, sophomore Danny Clasen, sophomore Taylor Debartola, senior Jamie Grace, sophomore Marie Allender, junior Molly Howle and sophomore Lauren Smith. The next swim meet for Starrs Mill, coached by J.B. Campbell, is Dec. 11 when they travel to Woodward Academy. The Fayette County High swim team competed in the 2003 Golden Isles Meet in Brunswick last weekend, finishing in sixth place out of 16 high schools. The 200-yard free relay of Christina Froehlinch, Jordan Gore, Rachel Talley and Tara Weingartner placed fifth. The girls relay team of Ashley Voller, Talley, Katelyn Davis and Gore placed sixth in the 200 medley relay. Sophomore Davis finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and sixth in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Gore finished sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a best time of 27.18. Junior Talley finished sixth in the 200-yard individual medley. Junior David Nash finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a best time of 25.28. Senior Jay Page finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly. Senior Kirk Palan finished fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a best time of 1:10.22. Fayette County has qualified two individual swimmers and two relay teams for the state high school championship. The team is coached by Mike Donaldson.
