Nativity presents Lessons and Carols Dec. 14

The St. Cecilia Choir of The Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Fayetteville, under the direction of music minister Joanne Brown, will present a service of Advent Lessons and Carols on Dec. 14, at 5 p.m. at the church. The program is free and the community is invited to attend. A nursery will be provided.

Advent marks the start of the new church year, beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ending at sundown on Christmas eve. Over time, it has become a time of spiritual preparation for The Feast of the Nativity of Jesus. The Advent wreath, a circular wreath with five candles, is an increasingly popular symbol the season both in homes and in area churches.

What is Advent Lessons and Carols? The Rev. Bob Hudak, rector of Nativity, explains, “The service itself simply alternates prayers, Bible readings, and music appropriate for the season. Originally written as a Christmas service in 1880, it was adapted for use in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, in 1918. The College still holds a service each year on Christmas Eve.

“Lessons and Carols is compelling in its simplicity and beauty,” Hudak continues. “We offer it to the community as an opportunity to discover a quiet space among the noise and confusion of holiday preparations.”

The Episcopal Church of the Nativity is at 130 Antioch Road, off of Hwy. 92 South in Fayetteville. It is one of the 92 parishes in the Diocese of Atlanta and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
