STG stages Capra classic By JOHN MUNFORD Holiday shopping got you down? Missing your Christmas spirit and cant find it on the FM dial? The folks at Southside Theatre Guild in Fairburn have just the elixir for you: a presentation of the classic Frank Capra film Its a Wonderful Life beginning Thursday, Dec. 6. The play features George Bailey, a well-liked and admired businessman who considers ending his life to spare his family financial hardship. Angel Second Class Clarence Odbody helps Bailey realize the impact he has had on others and that he really has lived a wonderful life. Local writer Mike Boylan is featured in his first leading role since high school as George Bailey, with Peachtree City resident Terry Hoffman as Clarence Odbody. Doug Searcy, who was last seen in STG production of The Foreigner, is featured as villain Henry F. Potter, a miserly character who tries to run the Baileys out of business. Rachel White plays Mary Hatch, who later becomes George Baileys wife, and Reynolds Allen plays Uncle Billy, who was last featured in Newnan Communitys Theaters rendition of Our Town. Director Tammy Hyder Williams said the production will vary from the movie in some respects and will appeal to those who wonder what the world would be like without them. George is given a gift that Christmas Eve night, a chance to see what the world would be like ... and he is amazed at how many lives he impacted both in Bedford Falls and on the war front, Williams said. Williams said the biggest challenge has been cobbling together the moving set for the play. She also expressed surprise at how many reservations have been made for the eight performances. The play will be presented Thursday through Saturday Dec. 4-6 and Dec. 11-13 at 8 p.m. Sunday performances Dec. 7 and Dec. 14 will be at 2 p.m. All performances are at the guilds theater in downtown Fairburn on West Campbellton Street.
