Tournaments make for busy holiday
By MONROE
ROARK While enjoying a break from classes, most of the local high school basketball teams took part in holiday tournament around the metro Atlanta area and will resume their regular schedules in earnest this week. The McIntosh Chiefs overwhelmed the Paideia Pythons with a flawless first quarter, then played scrappy defense to hold on for a 51-45 win at the Mt. Zion tournament Saturday night. The Chiefs found the open man every time down the floor at the outset. Mixing fast break layups with three-point jumpers, McIntosh hit five 3-pointers en route to a 26-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Both teams settled down and played tough defense the rest of the way. Paideia came back on the shooting touch of Ali Kareem who led all scorers with 17 points. Mike Vandenberg added 14 for the Pythons. McIntosh enjoyed a balanced scoring attack from inside and out. But poor free throw shooting, only 3 of 10, prevented the Chiefs from icing the game until Cameron Wallace put back an offensive rebound with less than a minute to go. Jason Williams and Cameron Wallace each scored 12 for the Chiefs and Brett Boron and Patrick Cheney added 9 apiece. In the girls game, Paideia prevailed 47-32.
