Riding another first-half offensive tidal wave, the Landmark War Eagles put up 33 points before intermission en route to a 47-6 thrashing of the Twiggs County Cobras Friday night at Bill Thorn Stadium.

On the heels of a 44-13 win over Social Circle in the first round of the Class A state playoffs, Landmark (11-1) won a second-round playoff game for the first time in school history and will now get to host a third straight playoff game, this time against Clinch County (10-1-1). Game time is Saturday at 7 p.m.

Landmark racked up 503 yards of total offense against a Twiggs County team that was ranked in the top 10 in the state. The Cobras amassed 165 yards rushing and only 2 passing yards while turning the ball over six times.

Tight end Nick Taussig, a Fayette County resident, scored on an 80-yard touchdown pass from Alex Mortensen to break a 6-6 tie in the first quarter, and the rout was on. Eric Worrell, also of Fayette County, caught two scoring passes in the first half and now has 70 receptions for 1,300 and 19 touchdowns in 2003. All are school records.

Mortensen’s three touchdown passes raised his season total to 29, and he should go over the 2,500-yard mark this week. Torey Roberson rushed for 79 yards and scored twice, while Dylan Hanes and Miles also ran for touchdowns.

Taussig and David Morris led the defense with eight tackles apiece, and each recovered two fumbles. Hanes and Worrell had a pass interception apiece.
