Nativity to offer special Advent service Dec. 14

The St. Cecilia Choir of The Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Fayetteville, under the direction of music minister Joanne Brown, will present a service of Advent Lessons and Carols on Dec. 14, at 5 p.m. at the church. The program is free and a nursery will be provided.

The season of Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas and ends the day before Christmas.

The service of Lessons and Carols alternates prayers, Bible readings, and seasonal music. It was written in England in 1880 and it was adapted for use in the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge, in 1918. The college still holds a service each year on Christmas Eve.

“Over time,” a spokesperson said, “Advent has become a time of spiritual preparation for The Feast of the Nativity of Our Lord. ‘Lessons and Carols,’ as it is known, is compelling in its simplicity and beauty. Nativity offers it to the community as an opportunity to discover a quiet space among the confusion of holiday preparations.”

The Episcopal Church of the Nativity is at 130 Antioch Rd., off Ga. Hwy. 92 South in Fayetteville. It is one of the 92 parishes in the Diocese of Atlanta and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion.
