Thurber represents USC on SEC Soccer Good Works Team South Carolina womens soccer player Amanda Thurber, a sophmore from Fayetteville and 2002 graduate of Starrs Mill High, has been named to the SEC Soccer Good Works Team, which highlights an athlete from each SEC school who gives back to their community through service efforts. Thurber, a biology major, worked at a soccer clinic for Lexington County Soccer Club and read to students for Read Across America Day at Saluda River Academy for the Arts. Thurber spoke about leadership and interacted with the kids at River Springs Elementary and Irmo Elementary Schools. She has also demonstrated safety techniques for playing soccer at the Soccer Safety Clinic at Providence Northeast Hospital. In high school, Thurber served as a peer mediator and was vice-president of her senior class. She played in all 21 matches this year for the Gamecocks with 20 starts. The midfielder had two goals and three assists on the season. The daughter of Bill and Karen Thurber of Fayette County has been called the playmaker for the Lady Gamecocks. She was named the teams freshman of the year last season. She was captain of the Starrs
Mill team her junior and senior years and helped lead the Lady Panthers
to state titles in 1999 and 2000.
