St. Gabriel's will have Thanksgiving Day Mass

The Catholic Church of Saint Gabriel in Fayetteville will have its annual Thanksgiving Day Mass Thursday, Nov. 27, at 10:30 a.m. and will continue a tradition begun many years ago.

In years past, members of the congregation invited those attending the thanksgiving Day Mass to bring bread and wine to be shared at a family table later in the day. That tradition has continued and Father Jimmy Adams, current pastor of St. Gabriel’s, will say a special blessing over the food, as has been done on previous occasions.

“This is a special added touch for the congregation,” said a parish spokesperson. “When we first began this tradition, the table had little food to be blessed. Over the years the practice has grown until, in some years, tables had to be added to accommodate the amount of food brought by parishioners.”

The church began as a mission church when the first Mass was celebrated in the American Legion Log Cabin in downtown Fayetteville in August of 1987. It was named an official parish of the Archdiocese of Atlanta on Oct. 1, 1993.

Today, St. Gabriel’s, located on Antioch Rd. off Ga. Hwy. 92 South, is home to more than 625 families in Fayette County.
