Plenty of entertainment in the metro area this weekend By MICHAEL
BOYLAN Whether you are a fan of musicals, drama or just plain music, there is a lot going on this week and weekend to keep you entertained. The Henry Players will present one of the most beloved musicals of all time when they present Annie at the Henry County Performing Arts Center, Thursday-Sunday. Annie is an orphan who is selected to spend Christmas with rich man Oliver Daddy Warbucks as a way to make him appear more sensitive. The two bond nearly instantly and Warbucks plans to adopt Annie. When Ms. Hannigan, the evil orphanage owner finds out, she concocts a plan to get her hands on some of Warbucks money. The show will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Advance tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children. Tickets at the door are $1 more. Phone 770-914-1474 or visit www.henryplayers.com for reservations or more information. The Fox Theatre will present a more modern musical when they bring in the Tony Award winning musical, Urinetown. Despite the off-putting title, Urinetown is at its heart a love story set in a city during a water shortage. Two star-crossed lovers find each other and then find strength inside themselves to start a revolution. Urinetown won three Tony Awards, Best Book, Best Music and Best Direction. Performances will run through Nov. 16 at the Fox. Tickets range from $15-$46. Phone 404-249-6400 or visit www.ticketmaster.com. Last week, Starrs Mill was due to present All in the Timing at McIntosh High School. The show had to be postponed due to problems with the lighting system. The play will now be performed at Starrs Mills Willie Duke Auditoirum tonight and tomorrow at 7 p.m. Admission is $5. In addition to all of the theater, Spivey Hall will have a busy weekend with some world class musicians. Pianist Michiko Otaki will perform with the Kodaly String Quartet on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 8:15 p.m. Otaki serves as the Clayton State Music Departments Director of Keyboard Activities. She will join the Kodaly Quartet for the Dohnanyi Piano Quintet. The Kodaly String Quartet will perform Kodalys String Quartet No. 2 and Beethovens Quartet Op. 59, No. 3. Tickets are $25. Phone 770-960-4200. On Sunday, Catrin Finch. the first official harpist to the Prince of Wales in more than a century will perform at 3 p.m. She began to study harp at the age of six and by the age of 10 was performing at the World Harp Congress in Paris. She has played all over the world and in 2000 won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions as well as the Princeton University Concerts Prize and the Orchestra New England Soloist Prize. Tickets are $20. Phone 770-960-4200. As always, there are plenty of things to do. If none of these events strikes your fancy, you could always start your Christmas shopping. |
