Bond approved for library; what’s next?

Though it was a lesson learned in the last Presidential election, members of the Peachtree City Library Commission learned it again Tuesday when the bond referendum for expansion and renovation of the library in Peachtree City passed by 76 votes.

The project will cost $4.7 million and will increase the size of the library by 11,000 square feet, expanding both into the plaza and behind the current children’s section. In addition to larger sections for children, young adults and adults, there will also be additional parking, better lighting, an improved HVAC system with better humidity controls, a larger audio/visual section, repairs to the roof, wider aisles, that are up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and more.

The next step is the purchase of the bond itself and Randy Gaddo, director of leisure services, will address the library commission at their next meeting, Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, to tell both the commission and the community what happens from here. Commission chair Chris Clark could not give a rough estimate of when construction would start, stating that much of the remainder of the process is in the city’s hands.

When asked what he thought contributed to the bond’s narrow victory, Clark stated that there was great planning on the commission’s part. “We pulled together and listened to the public to make it a community wide effort,” Clark added. “That’s why I think it succeeded.”
