Annual Can-A-Thon is underway

The Newnan Junior Service League’s Can-A-Thon is underway. This is the 20th year that Newnan has held this event, and businesses, schools, and churches are beginning to collect donations that will help stock Newnan’s food pantry for the upcoming year. Last year, the goal was to collect 140,000 cans, and the Junior Service League collected 152,300.

The group also started a competition between the schools, since they are the major contributors. The winners of the Can-A-Thon trophies were Northside Elementary with 6,000 cans collected, East Coweta Middle with 10,547 cans collected and East Coweta High with 26,500 cans collected.

The group has set the goal this year at 200,000, due to this being the 20th year of the Can-A-Thon.

Members of the Junior Service League and community will be on the court square in downtown Newnan Dec. 2 from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. receiving donations. The Food Pantry will be open that day receiving donations from noon to 9 p.m. It is so important at this time of year to remember to be thankful for what we have and in turn help those in need.

If you would like more information about the Can-A-Thon, please contact Stephanie Smith, chair, at 770-252-1222. Coweta County is home to one of the largest populations of families in need in the metropolitan Atlanta area. Don’t forget to make your donation. Every can makes a difference.
