Sewer letter riling up residents

A letter claiming residents need to “hop to it” and get ready to connect to the city’s new sewer system caused a flood of calls to the Senoia City Hall this week.

Over the weekend, several residents received a letter from Simcox Plumbing and Mechanical urging residents to start thinking about the impending hook-up with the sewer system. The city provides the sewer outlet at the street, but residents must pay for the piping that runs from their house to the street.

“We are months away from anybody hooking up to the system, and I think this letter is misleading,” said Mayor Dianne Cleveland at Monday night’s City Council meeting.

She said the letter indicated Simcox was working closely with the general contractor and the city on the sewer project.

“The city is not endorsing any plumbing contractor,” Cleveland said.

Tim Simcox, who sent out the letter, rose from the back of the room to explain his position. He said he had been in direct contact with the contractor and city administrator Murray McAfee several times. He added that he knew it would be a while before the hookups started, but wanted to make the residents aware of him and his company.

Councilman Pat Tunnell agreed residents needed more information about the hookup fees.

“The people need to be informed about this,” he said.

Cleveland said she had talked to the Bank of Coweta about providing signature loans for residents who needed help in paying the fees.

“I don’t want a loan. I just want to know how much it’s going to be,” Tunnell said.

Cleveland explained the fee would be not be a set amount, because everybody’s situation is different. But, since the hookups are still many months away, she said the city would be keeping the residents updated on when the sewer system would be connecting to their home.
