Special music coming to Newnan Saturday

The Fayette County area is in for a rare fall treat Saturday when a popular local musician brings together some regional talent in what promises to be a night of great music at the Wadsworth Auditorium in Newnan.

The event, billed as “An Evening of Music with Doug Kees and Special Guests,” will showcase the guitar talents of Kees as well as a number of friends performing traditional jazz, blues, rock and much more.

Doug Kees has a long history of involvement with the life of West Georgia’s music community. Kees received a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance from Georgia State University in 1989. He began a music instruction business in Newnan in 1989 and for the past 15 years Kees has built his standing in teaching private music lessons. A practicing musician who frequently plays around the metro Atlanta areas, including Fayette County, Kees has been on the faculty of Newnan’s The Heritage School in the Department of Music since 1993. Kees attempts to teach his students not only the dynamics of playing, but music history, theory and how young people can find a meaningful place for music in their lives.

On the program from Fayetteville is Jody Butler, a teacher and guitarist of over thirty years. A former guitar student in the music programs of both West Georgia University and the University of Georgia, she began studying guitar with Kees in 2002. In August, 2003, Butler attended the Swannanoa Gathering Guitar Week in Asheville, North Carolina where she studied both flatpicking and finger style guitar with several professional players and instructors. She will perform a fingerstyle selection, “Spindrift,” composed by Al Petteway, internationally known fingerstyle guitar recording artist and one of the Swannanoa instructors.

A place for music in the lives of young and old is a good cause for celebration. You and your family are encouraged to join this celebration of music Nov. 8 at the Wadsworth Auditorium in downtown Newnan as Doug Kees and his special guests share the last 15 years of their musical experience. Advance tickets are available at Newnan Music (770-253-5670), Scott’s Bookstore (770-253-2960) and the Wadsworth Auditorium box office.
