Patriots clinch region crown By MONROE ROARK Can anyone beat the Sandy Creek Patriots? Not in their region, it appears. After last Fridays 34-16 win over Woodward Academy, the Patriots stand alone atop Region 4-AAAA with an 8-0 record (9-0 overall). Even a loss this week against Pebblebrook would put them, at worst, tied with Woodward, meaning they would win based on this most recent game. With a trip to south Cobb for the Pebblebrook, Sandy Creek will try to become the first Fayette County school to run the table in the regular season since Starrs Mill went 10-0 in 2000. That Panther team went on to reach the state semifinals at the Georgia Dome, a mark the Patriots will also try to match in the coming weeks. Except for a 24-21 win over Douglas County, the Woodward game was Sandy Creeks lowest margin of victory this season. The team has also scored 34 of more points in every other game. Against Woodward, Phillip Hyde rushed for 176 yards and two touchdowns, and Dusty Bennett passed for 138 yards and two scores. Both touchdown passes were caught by Calvin Johnson, who had eight receptions for 108 yards. Will Judson returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and Gerren Griffin picked off two Woodward passes. Griffin, Brian Brown and Jeremy Long each had a fumble recovery. After the Pebblebrook game, the Patriots will have a bye week before their first playoff game the weekend of Nov. 21-22. Landmark 41, Bowdon 0: The War Eagles (7-1, 3-0 in Region 5-A) clinched a playoff spot with a huge win over Bowdon, who is now in second place in the same region. Landmark has two region games remaining, including a date this Friday at Our Lady of Mercy. The War Eagle defense allowed 54 yards of total offense through three quarters. Nick Taussig had 11 tackles, and David Morris added 10. Morris also recorded a sack and returned a fumble 39 yards for a touchdown. Offensively, Taussig caught two touchdown passes, and Eric Worrell had nine receptions for 139 yards and a score. Worrell has now caught a touchdown pass in six consecutive games. Alex Mortensen was 19-of-28 for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He has thrown for 548 yards in seven touchdowns in two straight victories over Bowdon. Mortensen also ran for a touchdown Friday night. Heard County 34, Our Lady of Mercy 13: The Bobcats (2-7, 1-3) host Landmark this Friday to wrap up their 2003 season. Lovejoy 41, McIntosh 0: The Chiefs, who have not had a bye week yet this season, close out 2003 with a 3-7 record. Starrs Mill and Fayette
County, both of whom were off this past weekend, square off Friday at
Starrs Mill to complete their respective seasons.
