North Fayette UMC
will celebrate 20th anniversary
Founding pastor Dee Shelnutt
will be on hand to help members of North Fayette United Methodist Church
celebrate the churchs 20th anniversary Nov. 14, 15 and 16. The church
began as an unnamed congregation 20 years ago in Shelnutts home,
with 10 members present. The first service was held at the old Kenwood
school building with 36 in attendance. Shelnutt is now pastor of St. Johns
Creek United Methodist in Duluth.
The celebration begins Friday evening, Nov. 14, with a birthday bash from
7-9 p.m. in the Activities center. Photos of events and individuals through
the years will be displayed on a big screen, followed by a presentation
of the birthday cake and a tribute by North Fayettes younger singers.
Jesus Tree, the youth choir, will perform music and a skit, and Leslie
Carson and the Grove Gang will present interviews highlighting North Fayettes
20 years. Following a singalong, members will present a photo show and
participate in closing fellowship.
On Saturday, Nov. 15, the church will host a celebration picnic from noon
until 3 p.m. at the Killebrew Farm on Ga. Hwy. 85 Connector, three miles
southeast of Brooks.
Festivities will continue Sunday morning with three services led by the
Rev. Steve Lyle, former pastor of North Fayette and currently pastor of
Marietta First United Methodist. Lead pastor Zip Long will sing at all
three services and the North Fayette Chancel and Bell choirs also will
participate.
The celebration will conclude Sunday evening with a Grand Finale Banquet
and worship service at 7:30 p.m., led by Shelnutt. A nursery will be provided
during the Friday and Sunday evening events.
Since that first service 20 years ago, the church has grown to occupy
three buildings at 847 New Hope Rd. in Fayetteville. The Rev. Franklin
(Zip) Long is the current lead pastor of the congregation which has traditional
services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and a contemporary service, The Grove,
