Four local volleyball teams are in the state’s Elite Eight in their respective classifications, and two of them could be squaring off one more time this weekend.
McIntosh and Starr’s Mill advanced in separate AAAAA state sectionals last weekend to earn a trip to Marietta High this Saturday. At Parkview, McIntosh won three straight matches: over Lassiter (25-15, 25-22, 25-16), Kennesaw Mountain (18-25, 25-14, 25-17, 25-19) and Parkview (27-25, 25-13, 28-30, 25-17). The Lady Chiefs play Oconee County Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Marietta.
Starr’s Mill came back from Savannah last weekend with wins over Walton ( 23-25, 25-20, 14-25, 25-14, 15-10) and McEachern (25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23), along with a loss to Sequoyah (25-19, 22-25, 14-25, 24-26). The Lady Panthers play Kennesaw Mountain, also at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Marietta.
Should McIntosh and Starr’s Mill win those matches, they play each other at 2 p.m. Since the Elite Eight competition is a double-elimination format, the Lady Chiefs and Lady Panthers could conceiveably play each other twice this weekend, just as they did in the area tournament.
Sandy Creek won two of three matches last Saturday at Riverwood, earning a spot in the AAAA Elite Eight at Marist. After winning over Salem and Harris County, the Lady Patriots lost to Marist (18-25, 17-25, 21-25) in the final match of the day. Sandy Creek plays Ringgold Saturday at 10 a.m.
In the A/AA sectionals at Pace Academy, Landmark won three straight matches, the final one over Wesleyan (25-18, 25-12, 25-22). Their opening Elite Eight match is Saturday at 10 a.m. against Prince Avenue at Holy Innocents.
Championship matches in all classifications are Nov. 8 at Westminster.
