As the regular season winds down, playoff positions are really beginning to take shape and some important region games loom large on the horizon.
Sandy Creek is in the driver’s seat in Region 4-AAAA with a 7-0 region mark. The Patriots host Woodward, who is 6-0 in the region, Friday night in what is perhaps the marquee game in the entire state this weekend.
As of today, Pebblebrook (5-2) and Douglas County (4-3) occupy the next two region spots. The Patriots have already beaten Douglas County and play Pebblebrook in the season finale. They can finish no worse than third in the region, but a win over Woodward gives them the top spot going into the state playoffs.
Landmark (6-1, 2-0) is tied for first in Region 5-A with Bowdon (5-2, 2-0). They square off Friday night at Landmark. As there are only six teams in the region and some of them have three region games left, anything can happen. Our Lady of Mercy (2-6, 1-2) has two region games left.
In Region 4-AAAAA, three of the four playoff teams are set, although the order is not. Lovejoy is 5-0 in region play, while Newnan and East Coweta are tied at 5-1 with a showdown Nov. 7 at Newnan. Regardless of the outcome, neither team can finish lower than third.
The fourth spot is wide open. McIntosh is 2-4 with a game left against Lovejoy. Starr’s Mill is 2-4 with a game left against Fayette County. Riverdale is 2-3 with games remaining against Lovejoy and Carver-Columbus.
If McIntosh beats Lovejoy, Fayette County beats Starr’s Mill and Riverdale loses one of its games, McIntosh is in the playoffs. If Starr’s Mill beats Fayette County and Riverdale loses both of its games, Starr’s Mill is in the playoffs. Any other combination of wins and losses will send Riverdale to the postseason.
Starr’s Mill 24, McIntosh 7: The Panthers rolled up 336 yards of total offense Friday night, led by Michael Buice’s 100 rushing yards and Robbie Williams’ 134 passing yards.
Buice scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter, and Cody Smith ran 11 yards for a score in the second. After a Russell Warren field goals, Starr’s Mill made it a 24-0 game when Williams connected with Ryan Barr on a 14-yard touchdown pass late in the third.
Cameron Wallis scored the only McIntosh touchdown when he caught a 21-yard pass from Taylor Lee in the fourth quarter.
Landmark 45, Whitefield 14: Alex Mortensen threw for 181 yards with touchdown passes to Eric Worrell and Tyler Tidwell, while Dylan Hanes ran for 77 yards and two scores. Myles King rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown, and Worrell scored on a 63-yard punt return, the second time in two games he ran back a kick all the way.
Sandy Creek 42, Forest Park 19: In the only Saturday night game of the weekend, the Patriots traveled to Clayton County and easily handled Forest Park, the only winless team in Region 4-AAAA.
Riverdale 12, Fayette County 0: The Raiders kept their playoffs hopes alive and eliminated the Tigers from postseason contention.
Bowdon 48, Our Lady of Mercy 31: Although they amassed their highest point output of the season, the Bobcats could not keep up with Bowdon, but they remain alive in the playoff chase.
Whitewater 21, Sandy Creek 12: Continuing to delight their fans in their inaugural season, the Wildcats improved their record to 7-1 by defeating Sandy Creek’s freshman team.
