Covenant Presbyterian to host Bowden concert

Covenant Presbyterian Church, PCA invites the public to a special concert of classical and Christian music performed by organist Nicholas Bowden this Sunday, November 2, at 4:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary.

Bowden, principal organist at the Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta since 1993, enjoys a national reputation as a church musician and entertainer.

He has performed in venues across the United States and Europe as both an organ soloist and conductor. He has appeared in a number of television specials over the years from local Atlanta stations to Diane Bish’s “The Joy of Music,” which is broadcast worldwide. He can be seen each week on the nationally televised broadcasts of Peachtree Presbyterian Church.

Bowden attended Mercer University in Macon and became the associate organist at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., where he served until 1991.

This Sunday’s program will include such classical organ pieces as Bach’s Prelude and Fugue in F, the Finale from Symphony No. I by Louis Vierne, and the famous Toccata from Symphony No. 5 by Charles-Marie Widor. In addition, Bowden will perform arrangements of such familiar and beloved hymns as “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” “His Eye is on the Sparrow,” and “Now Thank We All Our God.”

Pastor Dale Welden said, “This is yet another service to our community, and we hope the concert ministers to people as our guest organist presents a stellar musical program.”

The concert is presented in part to celebrate the major refurbishment and expansion by technician Bob Weaver of the classic 1920s-built Austin organ.

“We have a rare and wonderful instrument at Covenant Presbyterian Church,” explains church organist Martin Alexander, who supervised the work. “It’s only fitting that an organist of Nick Bowden’s caliber showcase this organ for the public. After hearing his stirring performances, listeners will understand immediately why the organ is called ‘the King of Instruments.’”

Music director Sam Burch said “The concert was designed to demonstrate the beauty and excitement of organ music. For far too long, organ music has been seen as unfamiliar and esoteric. The pieces chosen for this concert include many familiar melodies, ones that speak to peoples’ hearts and minds.”

The program is free and will begin promptly at 4:30 p.m. Covenant Presbyterian is at 819 Ga. Hwy. 314 in Fayetteville. For more information, contact the church office, 770-460-9450 or covenant@aol.com.
