New cross-country
club now forming
Local cross-country
athletes now have an opportunity to compete beyond the high school schedule
as new team is forming in time for some major USA Track and Field events.
The 2003 SouthSide Pioneers Cross-Country All-Stars team wants to give
the finest cross-country athletes from local high school and middle schools
on the southside of Atlanta (and mainly Fayette and South Fulton counties)
a chance to compete as a team on the 2003 USATF Junior Olympics circuit,
beginning Saturday, Nov. 15, with the 2003 USATF Georgia Association Cross
Country Championships at Al Bishop Park in Marietta. The top three teams
and 25 individuals will advance to the 2003 Region III Cross Country Championship
meet Nov. 22 in Mechanicsville, Va., near Richmond. The top three teams
and 20 individuals who advance from this meet will go on to compete at
the 2003 USATF Junior Olympics National Cross Country Championship Meet
Dec. 13 in Albuquerque, N.M.
Local cross-country athletes who are currently part of a high school cross-country
program or an individual training program (ages 6-18) will represent the
Fayette County/southside of Atlanta area at these meets. In addition,
top cross-country athletes who register with the SouthSide Pioneers Cross
Country All-Stars Team will be chosen and named by a local newspaper to
the first ( 2003) SouthSide Pioneers Cross Country All-Stars Honor Roll.
The 2003 SouthSide Pioneers Cross Country All-Stars Head Coaches will
also be named then.
If you want to become part of this All-Star team, register at the SouthSide
Pioneers Cross Country All-Stars Registration and Informational Meeting
Monday, Oct. 27, at the Fayette County Library in Fayetteville, from 7-9
p.m. This will be the only day for registration. The registration fee
is $125, which includes a team uniform package and a youth USATF membership.
You must bring either a copy of your birth certificate or drivers
license and a copy of your most recent physical in order to register.
This is the first time in the history of the Fayette County area that
local high school cross-country athletes from the southside of Atlanta
will have the chance to team up with each other to form a powerhouse team
in Georgia. Elementary and middle school students are welcome to join
the team as well.
