With their respective region tournaments out of the way, four Fayette teams will now face the state's best in their classifications as softball season winds down in the next two weeks.
The Starr's Mill Lady Panthers go into state sectionals with a 30-1 record, a 27-game winning streak and the No. 1 ranking in AAAAA. Meanwhile, the Fayette County Lady Tigers, last year's state champions, are still looking to repeat after also earning a spot at state.
The Lady Tigers defeated East Coweta 1-0 Thursday night in the Region 4-AAAAA tournament loser's bracket final for the right to play Starr's Mill for the second time in two days. Starr's Mill prevailed 12-1 in that game to take the region tournament crown.
Those two teams now travel to Freedom Park in Valdosta this weekend for the state sectionals. Starr's Mill will face Windsor Forest, the fourth seed from Region 3-AAAAA, Friday at 6 p.m. while Fayette County plays Brunswick, the third seed, Friday at 4 p.m..
The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots, having captured the fourth seed in the Region 4-AAAA tournament, head to Augusta for the next round. They will face Greenbrier, the top seed from Region 3-AAAA, Friday at 6 p.m. at Diamond Lakes Park.
Landmark Christian, the fourth seed in Region 5-A, will play Friday at 4 p.m. at Heritage Park in McDonough. Their opponent is Georgia Military, the top seed from Region 7-A.
Winners from the state sectionals in all classifications will move on to Columbus the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
