A winning week in Fayette

Last weekend was the winningest one so far this season for Fayette schools, as nearly every local team came up on the high end of the scoreboard, and some are jockeying for serious playoff position with only two or three games remaining in the regular season.
Whitewater: Recording their third shutout of the season, the Wildcats rolled to a 33-0 win over Mundy’s Mill Saturday to improve their record to 7-1.
Tavoris Dixon rushed for 129 yards and three touchdowns, scoring on runs of 45 and 48 yards. Brice Thomas had 75 rushing yards on 18 carries and a touchdown.
The Wildcats, who had 287 yards of total offense Saturday night, are averaging 30 points and 290 yards per game.
Landmark: The War Eagles moved to 6-1 and preserved their top-10 state ranking with a 42-7 win over Heard County in the first of their five Region 5-A games.
While throwing three touchdown passes — two to Tyler Tidwell and one to Eric Worrell — Alex Mortensen surpassed 1,000 passing yards for the third consecutive season. Worrell, who has 647 receiving yards in six games, also returned a kickoff 86 yards for a touchdown.
The Landmark defense held Heard County to 13 total yards in the second half. Zech Glaize recorded two tackles for losses and recovered a fumble, while Blaine Gable scored on a 37-yard interception return.
Fayette County: It took some extra time, but the Tigers finally broke into the win column Friday night with a 21-20 victory over region foe Carver of Columbus in double overtime. Fayette County is now 1-7 on the season and 1-4 in region play.
McIntosh: The Chiefs (3-5, 2-3) kept their playoff hopes alive Friday night with a 10-6 win over Riverdale in a Region 4-AAAAA game. They now sit alone in fourth place in the region. A win this Friday against Starr’s Mill would guarantee the Chiefs a share of fourth place for the season with either Riverdale or Starr’s Mill or both, with McIntosh getting the advantage in head-to-head competition.
Our Lady of Mercy: It’s two in a row for the Bobcats, who followed up their first win of the season with a 22-0 victory over Mt. Zion of Carroll County. Their overall record is 2-5 and they are 1-1 in region play.
Sandy Creek: The Patriots remain atop Region 4-AAAA af
ter Friday’s 42-8 rout of North Clayton. They are 7-0 overall and 6-0 in region play. They face winless Forest Park this Saturday at Tara Stadium in Jonesboro, then play at home Oct. 31 against Woodward, who could also be undefeated by then.
Starr’s Mill: Still fighting for the last playoff spot in Region 4-AAAAA, the Panthers fell 24-17 Friday night to unbeaten Newnan.
Trailing 3-0 in the second quarter, Starr’s Mill got on the board when Robbie Williams threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Barr. The Panthers added a field goal in the third quarter and a touchdown in the fourth on a pass from Williams to Brett Rogers. But Newnan’s goal-line stand in the game’s final minute preserved its victory.
The Panthers face McIntosh Friday night with the loser likely falling out of playoff contention.
