Business is the focus at Clayton State seminar

Contemporary and critical issues in business will be the theme of the Oct. 23 Business Conference at Clayton State's Harry S. Downs Center for Continuing Education Oct. 23.
Sponsored by the Clayton State School of Business Alumni, the conference runs from 9 a.m. to noon in room 101 of the Downs Center and will feature two outstanding speakers, including the opening speaker, Michael P. Baird, chief judge of the Magistrate Court of Clayton County and a Clayton State School of Business alumnus, who will be speaking on Business Ethics at 9 a.m.
Baird will be followed by Denise C. Canfield, senior vice president of AmSouth Bank, who will speak on The Importance of Communication in Business at 10:30 a.m.
Baird is a 1989 graduate of Clayton State where he earned a B.B.A. in Human Resource Management. He earned his law degree from Georgia State University College of Law in 1992. He was a partner in the law firm of Baird & Skibiel, P. C. and later served as a Senior Assistant Solicitor General in the State Court of Clayton County and was elected chief judge of the Magistrate of Clayton County in 1996.
He is a recipient of the 1996 Outstanding Community Service Award presented by the Jonesboro Fire Department, the 2001 Georgia Court Program of the Year Award, the 2003 Distinguished Business Alumni Award from Clayton State and the 2003 President's Award from the Georgia Council of Magistrate Court Judges.
As senior vice president and manager of Branch Support and Branch/ATM Delivery, a position she has held since 1996, Canfield oversees a number of banking delivery channels including AmSouth's branch and ATM network. Prior to assuming her current role, Canfield served AmSouth Bank as Manager of Sales Support and Manager of Deposit Products/Convenience Services Products from 1987-1996. During 1985 and 1986, she was an Audit Project Manager at Bankers Trust of South Carolina and a Project Manager at United American Bank in Memphis, Tennessee.
