The Starrs Mill Lady Panthers
won their 26th straight game and reached the finals of the Region 4-AAAAA
tournament with an 11-1 win over Fayette County Wednesday night at McCurry
Park.
Ranked first in the state, the Lady Panthers improved their record to
29-1 and awaited the winner of Thursday afternoons Fayette County-East
Coweta game to play for the region title. Starrs Mill would have to be
beaten twice to lose the championship.
The top four teams in the tournament Starrs Mill, Fayette County, East
Coweta and Lovejoy go on to the state sectionals in Valdosta next weekend.
The Lady Tigers beat East Coweta Tuesday night 8-7 to clinch their spot
in the state sectionals, while Starrs Mill defeated McIntosh 12-0 the
same night.
East Coweta qualified for state sectionals by moving back up through the
losers bracket in the double-elimination region tournament. The Lady Indians
defeated Newnan in their first game Wednesday, then beat Lovejoy, who
had won 5-4 over McIntosh earlier in the evening.
Not counting Mondays 7-0 win over Riverdale, which was a forfeit, Starrs
Mill outscored its opponents 107-1 in 11 games going into Thursday nights
action.
