Sandy Creek returns with a bigger Madrigal Dinner

Last year Sandy Creek High School students teamed up with members of the Fayette Youth Chorale to present a show unlike any they had done before.

The Madrigal Dinner gave audiences a magical night featuring humor, juggling, drama and song in addition to a feast fit for a king. This year, the Madrigal Dinner returns, though in a new location, the First Christian Church of Tyrone, and with a much larger cast.

The show is put together by drama teacher Kathy Andersen and chorus teacher Millie Turek. Before last year’s Madrigal Dinner, both teachers had only seen one Madrigal Dinner before. Now that they have one under their belts, the going seems easier. There are challenges though, most of them stemming from having such a large cast.

“There are over 100 people involved in this year’s show,” said Andersen. “The main challenge is to make sure that everybody is in the right place at the right time.”

While people who attended last year’s event may recognize some familiar faces and props, including a dragon and a unicorn, there is an entirely new script and more groups of wandering performers to perform during dinner. This year’s dinner, catered by Cafe Pig, will feature wassail, fruits, vegetables and cheeses, soup, bread, Olde Engeland Fowle with Sause (chicken), potato, pastries and either tea or water. Also, the Select Mixed Chorus will be performing this year, lending a different sound to some traditional medieval songs.

The mood around the show is very positive. Sales for the show have been brisk and the cast is very upbeat and looking forward to performing three nights filled with entertainment.

“We’re hoping to do this show every year for a long time to come,” said Andersen, who feels that the students really benefit from the performances. “The show is so interactive that once you do it, you’re no longer afraid of performing traditional theater anymore.”

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. with a processional. The show will be performed Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 23-25. Tickets are 420 per person or $150 for a table for eight. Phone Sue Burnett at 770-632-8783 for more information.
