Three Fayette schools won big on the gridiron Friday night — one picking up its first win of the year, another remaining unbeaten and atop its region, and a third getting a huge homecoming victory over an intracounty rival.

McIntosh: Friday night was homecoming, and the Chiefs football team did not disappoint the home crowd, pulling out a 24-6 win over the Fayette County Tigers.

More than a hundred McIntosh students ran joyfully onto the field as the final horn sounded, ending a five-game losing streak for the Chiefs (2-5). The Tigers’ record is now 0-7.

Defense dominated the game, as McIntosh got the first score of the game when Tyler Harris intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown.

Leading 19-0 at intermission, the Chiefs defense stepped up again in the third quarter and recorded a sack in the end zone for a safety. Jamil Merchant got the Tigers’ only score of the night on defense, scooping up a fourth-quarter fumble and returning it 75 yards to paydirt.

Sandy Creek: It was by far their closest game this season, but it was also their most important. The Patriots pulled out a 24-21 road win over region rival Douglas County to move to 6-0 on the season and 5-0 in region play.

The Patriots have four region games remaining, but That leaves just two unbeaten teams at the top of Region 4-AAAA: Sandy Creek and Woodward, who meet Oct. 31 in Tyrone.

Our Lady of Mercy: Hanging tough through a scoreless second half, the Bobcats entered the win column for the first time in 2003 with a 10-7 victory over Walker.

Sam Etuk, who rushed for 119 yards, score on the game’s opening drive with a 13-yard run. Todd Benson connected on a 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter, and Walker got on the board with a long punt return for a score just before halftime.

The Bobcat defense stepped up big in the second half, as Walker had good field position through the final two periods but could not score. The final two Walker possessions ended with big defensive plays, first with a Ralph Woolfolk interception (his second of the game) and next with a sack on fourth down that allowed the Bobcats to run out the clock.

Starr’s Mill: The Panthers fell to 2-5 on the season with a 21-16 loss to East Coweta.

Down 14-3 at the half, Starr’s Mill got a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Robbie Williams to keep it close. After East Coweta went up 21-10 early in the fourth quarter, Williams connected with Ryan Barr on an 81-yard scoring pass, and the Panthers went for two to make it a three-point game, but the conversion attempt failed. Williams threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Brett Rogers in the third quarter.

Kyle McCreary led the Panthers with 104 rushing yards on 18 carries. The team rolled up 376 yards of total offense and had only one turnover.
