Region softball tourney starts Monday

The brackets are set for the Region 4-AAAAA softball tournament, which gets underway Monday afternoon at McCurry Park in Fayetteville.

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers are the top seed, having closed out an undefeated region schedule with Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Fayette County. Starr’s Mill, now 26-1 on the season and ranked first in the state in AAAAA, also won five straight games in last weekend’s Milton High tournament and has outscored its opponents 84-0 over the past nine games.

The Lady Panthers play Riverdale at 5 p.m. Monday, with the Lady Tigers set to take on Lovejoy at 7 p.m. Seeded third in the region, the Lady Tigers are 21-8 overall and still ranked in the state’s top 10 as they look to defend their 2002 state title.

Both the Starr’s Mill and Fayette County games will be played Monday on same field at McCurry Park. On another field, the fourth-seeded McIntosh Lady Chiefs will face Newnan at 5 p.m., with second-seeded East Coweta scheduled to play Mundy’s Mill at 7 p.m.

All eight teams will play again Tuesday in the double-elimination tournament. The two teams who win Monday and Tuesday will advance to the state sectionals.
