PTC library expansion would meet 20-year need

The Peachtree City Library has run out of space! Capacity has been reached while demands for services have continued to expand.

The Peachtree City Library Commission has received information from library patrons, staff, the general public and surveys to determine the needs and recommendations to develop a library that will benefit all the citizens from the youngest to the oldest.

The commission contracted with Leo Daly Company to create a plan to expand and renovate the current building to meet the needs of our city for the next 20 years. This plan would cost the average homeowner approximately $26 yearly for 15 years. The money would be generated through approval of a bond referendum that will be on the Nov. 4, 2003, ballot in the Peachtree City general election.

Renovation and expansion would:

l increase available space from 20,000 to 31,000 square feet;

l create a 5,000 square feet children's area with flexible space for story time, baby time, small group activities, puppet shows, summer reading programs, creative activities, and room to expand shelving for more books, computers, audiovisual materials and reading areas;

l create a larger space for fiction and nonfiction books with room for future growth;

l create a larger reference area with expanded technology and easier access to computers;

l create areas for audiovisual for quick patron access;

l provide a Young Adult section;

l provide storage, work space and an administration area for better service;

l repair the roof, upgrade the lighting, resolve wall leaks, upgrade heating and air, improve humidity control, add electrical capacity, improve security;

l provide for access to technology and computers throughout for Internet, catalogue, and database;

l provide multiple sitting/study areas;

l provide for additional parking.

We need an inviting, user-friendly library with services for all ages. Please go by the library and look at the floor plan design and exterior view that are on display.

This information is presented to give a brief overview of the project to assist in making an informed decision on Nov. 4. I encourage Peachtree City voters to vote "yes" to expand and renovate the library.

Marie Washburn, vice-chairman

Peachtree City Library Commission
