Fuhrman wins Player of the Week honor The Freedom Football Conference announced Sunday afternoon that U.S. Merchant Marine Academy-Kings Point junior outside linebacker Matt Fuhrman, a Starrs Mill graduate, received the Conference's Defensive Player of the Week award for his efforts in the Mariners' 21-0 shutout over visiting Dickinson Saturday afternoon. Fuhrman shares the award with Ryan Rackliffe, a sophomore defensive tackle from WPI. Fuhrman was very instrumental in helping the defense post its first home shutout since Kings Point (3-1) shellacked Norwich by a 37-0 count in September, 2001. He registered 9 tackles (including a game-high 7 solos), a team-high two and one-half tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and a half-sack. The Mariners defense gave up only 136 yards in total offense and six first downs on the afternoon. Dickinson ran only 8 plays in Kings Point territory all game; four of which came in the last two minutes of the contest. On the year, the 6-foot, 205-pound outside linebacker leads the Mariners with 8.5 tackles for loss (for 52 yards), 2 forced fumbles, and 4.5 sacks (33 yards). Additionally, 17 of his 27 hits have been of the solo variety, good for the second-best mark on the squad (sophomore strong safety Frank Dore). First-year head coach Tim McNulty's Mariners will look to improve on its 3-1 record (and 1-1 mark in Freedom Football Conference play) next Saturday (Oct. 4), when it plays host to Rackliffe and the rest of the Engineers (2-2, no record in FFC play) at Capt. Tomb Field in Brooks Stadium. Kick-off for Kings Points Homecoming game is slated for 2 p.m.
