Library to host fiesta this Saturday

Highlighting the contributions of Hispanic Americans, learning about the cultures from which they come, is the focus of Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15.

The Peachtree City Library leads the city in the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month by hosting the third annual "Fiesta on the Plaza" slated for this Saturday, Oct. 4, from 2-5:30 p.m.

The event will be held at the municipal complex where the library and City Hall are located and features Hispanic food, ethnic dancing, live music by local band Spanish Flavor, and cultural displays, as well as crafts, pinatas and games for children. The public is invited to attend and admission is free.

The Los Matachines dancers from Fairburn will perform at 2 p.m. Los Matachines is a dance drama depicting the struggle between good and evil. The dance, which is thought to have been originally brought to the New World by the Spanish, features elaborate headdresses and colorful robes. Los Matachines will be followed by Danzas Genericas de Colombia, a dance group at 2:30 p.m. Iris Gonzalez and a companion will perform the popular courtship dance at 4 p.m.

The local band, Spanish Flavor will perform at 3:30 p.m. Families are invited to experience Hispanic culture through a variety of Latin rhythms including Salsa, Merengue, Spanish folk, Cumbia , Flamenco, Guajira and Cha-Cha. The library will sponsor a dance contest to be held during the concert. Prizes will be awarded.

Marta McGlade, a three-year veteran of Peachtree City's Hispanic Heritage Celebration will emcee the event.

El Ranchero Restaurant will provide "a taste of Mexico."

English as a Second Language (ESL) students from Peachtree City will prepare food from their native countries and cultural displays for the event as well. ESL classes are held Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon at the Gazebo across from the Recreation Administration building, as well as Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Peachtree City. ESL classes are free to the public. For more information on the ESL program, contact Peter Volin at 770-487-8910.

The Peachtree City Library will close at noon Oct. 4 in order to prepare for the "Fiesta."
