Wildcats's winning ways continue

In its inaugural football season, Whitewater High is making a mark in the county and hopes to do even better before the year is over.

The Wildcats moved to 4-1 on the season with a 53-0 win over the McIntosh freshman team last Thursday. Other victories in 2003 include a 28-6 win over Starr’s Mill in early September and a 42-6 win over Lovejoy two weeks ago. The team’s only loss, to Luella in Henry County, was against a JV squad comprised solely of sophomores and juniors (Whitewater High only has a ninth-grade class this year).

“It’s a unique situation,” said Wesley Hardin, Whitewater’s assistant coach and offensive coordinator. “This is a pretty tight-knit group.”

Since this is essentially Whitewater’s varsity team playing a non-region schedule, these freshmen get the benefit of a full coaching staff of a half-dozen or more, while freshman teams typically have two or three coaches. The head coach, Amos McCreary, came from Creekside High, where he fielded a number of playoff teams.

“The kids are really doing well,” said Hardin. “They’re playing hard, and they’re fired up.”

With no playoff scenario to look forward to this year, the Wildcats’ goal is to add to the Starr’s Mill and McIntosh wins and beat their remaining county opponents, Sandy Creek (Oct. 23) and Fayette County (Nov. 6). There is also a rematch with Luella Oct. 9.

The Wildcats host Woodward tomorrow at McCurry Park.

Sandy Creek: As they have done in every other game so far this season, the Patriots dominated their opponent last Friday night, winning 45-0 over Chapel Hill in a road game in Douglas County. The Patriots are now 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in Region 4-AAAA.

Starr’s Mill: The visiting Carver-Columbus squad got to the stadium late due to bus problems, and they never could get their offensive running against the Panthers, who celebrated homecoming with a 41-6 shellacking in a Region 4-AAAAA contest.

The home team exploded for 24 second-quarter points to take a 34-0 halftime lead, and Carver was unable to score until a minute left in the game. The Panthers racked up 346 yards of total offense and recorded 21 first downs on a turnover-free night, while the defense recovered three Carver fumbles and intercepted a pass.

Kyle McCreary rushed for 100 yards and three touchdowns, and Chad Smith added 98 yards and two scores.

McIntosh: The Newnan Cougars brought their record to 5-0 by pouncing on the Chiefs last Friday night and winning 42-14. They started off strong with an interception and two fumble recoveries in the first half, and they led 35-0 at intermission.

One of the key players in the game was Dural Stegall of Newnan. He led as an offensive threat by consistently breaking any pattern of the Chiefs’ defensive strategy. In the first half, Stegall had one touchdown and two punt returns for a total of 85 yards.

The Chiefs struggled both defensively and offensively as a number of interceptions and fumbles plagued their game. However, in the fourth quarter, Taylor Lee connected with Cameron Hall for McIntosh’s first touchdown of the night. The Chiefs went on to score one more touchdown in the final minutes. They have now lost four straight.

Fayette County: The East Coweta Indians came into Fayetteville Friday night and cruised to a 41-7 win over the Tigers, who fell to 0-5 on the season.

Trailing 28-0 at halftime, the Tigers got on the scoreboard in the third quarter when Hunter Rozakos and Clay Felton connected on an 81-yard touchdown pass.
