Lady Panthers top state poll; Joiner wins 400th
Two significant milestones were reached last week in local high school softball. Starrs Mill: In the latest coaches poll, the Lady Panthers top the states AAAAA rankings. After big wins last week over Mundys Mill (15-0) and Riverdale (17-0), each in three innings, the team is 20-1 on the season and riding a 17-game winning streak. As evidenced by last weeks scores, virtually every player has contributed offensively of late, according to head coach Mark Williamson. Fayette County: Ranked 5th in the state, the Lady Tigers picked up head coach Jill Joiners 400th career victory last week, and they did it close to home, with a 2-0 win at McIntosh. The Lady Tigers got only four hits, but they put two of them together at just the right time in the top of the seventh to break a scoreless tie. McIntosh was held to only one hit. Sandy Creek: Two heartbreaking losses made up the Lady Patriots week, according to head coach Lisa Pearce. The team led Chapel Hill going into the sixth inning before falling 8-6, then took a lead into the fifth against Northgate but lost 5-3. Terri Manthey, Ashleigh Ward and Ryan Walker had excellent games, Pearce said, with Manthey pitching both times. Our Lady of Mercy: After a 14-4 loss to Mt. Zion-Carrollton, the Lady Bobcats bounced back with an 11-1 win over Landmark in five innings. LaMonica Moreland pitched a complete game, giving up five hits and no earned runs. She was helped by good defensive support, head coach Mark Waxmonsky said. Marina Fleming was the bright spot in the Mt. Zion game with a pair of doubles.
