Local group is a home away from home for writers

Helen Parker Steele has finally found a new family and a home away from home. It is the Fayette Writers Group, which meets every Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon. Steele is the secretary for the group.

"It is refreshing to start the day with bright faces and creativity," said Steele. "There are so many different forms of writing and expression."

Steele, like many in the group, can not remember a time when she did not write. She remembers the love of writing dating back to her teenage years when she wrote long, detailed letters to family and friends.

Today, after much experience, Steele is the President of the United Methodist Women and the AARP chapter in Riverdale, utilizing her God-given gifts of writing and leadership. In 1982, she became a Certified Lay Speaker, Griffin District, North Georgia Conference, UMC. However, this busy lady was searching for more.

Writers and authors of the Fayette Writers group lead busy lives outside of their creative worlds. Many use writing as an escape from their everyday lives, periodic vacations of sorts. The art certainly keeps the mind enlightened and occupied.

The group serves as an excellent source for the beginning write/author as well as the more seasoned ones. This group of individuals shares their expertise and helps each other become better writers. Every month featured guests from the writing/publishing community enlighten the group with their insight, knowledge and expertise.

Although the love for writing shines clear and bright, presentation is also a feature of the group. It is the next step for a writer/author and the ability to present is encouraged. Group members take on the responsibility of individual presentations, sharing what they have learned through their research and experiences.

Each member brings their personal touch to the group and not everyone has the same ambitions. Steele is a public speaker, finding it necessary to research and compile information and write the material she then presents. Her writings have spanned from devotionals and articles to tributes and memorials After completing a creative writing course at Clayton College and State University, she published "Wit and Wisdom by a Woman," and continues to compile history for her family.

The essence and purpose of the Fayette Writers Group is to help each member and guest pursue their dreams and reach their potential and goals.
