Panthers, Patriots win big
Opening its 2003 home football schedule in fine fashion, Starr's Mill broke open a close game with an explosive third quarter and cruised to a 29-0 win over Spalding County. The Panthers are now 1-2 on the season. The only scoring of the first half came on a 15-yard pass from Robbie Williams to Ryan Barr, putting the Panthers up 6-0. But in the third quarter, Williams and Barr connected again on a 31-yard scoring pass, and Williams ran one in himself from 18 yards out. Antonio Scott's 1-yard touchdown and Russell Warren's extra point made it a 26-0 game with a minute to play in the third quarter. Warren's field goal in the final period closed out the scoring. Starr's Mill racked up 19 first downs and nearly 400 yards of total offense. Kyle McCreary led the ground attack with 123 yards on 17 carries. Defensively, the Panthers held Spalding to 54 total yards and five first downs while forcing three fumbles, one of which they recovered. Sandy Creek: The second big win in a row for the Patriots, and their first region victory, came Friday night at home by a 34-7 score over Alexander High of Douglas County. Phillip Hyde scored from a yard out in the first quarter, and a long punt return set up a Dusty Bennett touchdown pass to Brian Brown on the next possession. Leading 14-7 at the half, the Patriots scored on their first three possessions in the third quarter on runs by Brown and Jermaine Jones along with a scoring pass from Josh Haney to Jamal Rose. Hyde rushed for 137 yards in the game. Landmark: The War Eagles returned to the win column with a 54-0 victory over Brookstone in a nonregion game. Fayette County: In their first Region 4-AAAAA contest of the season, the Tigers traveled to Newnan and fell 34-20 to the Cougars. A pair of Hart Pearson field goals gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter, but a long kickoff return and a two-play drive by Newnan tied the score. A 75-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Horne to Demiko Goodman, the state's reigning 400-meter champion, gave the Cougars the lead at halftime. Fayette County tied the game at 13 early in the third on an 8-yard pass from Hunter Rozakos to Ri'Chard Davis, but Newnan would score three more times before backup Tiger quarterback Alex Dickinson's 34-yard pass to Davis for a touchdown in the game's final two minutes. McIntosh: Lowndes High fullback Marlon Jones ran for 128 yards on 10 carries and scored twice in a 36-0 nonregion win over the Chiefs in south Georgia. Lowndes, ranked in the states top 10 in AAAAA, improved to 3-0 while McIntosh fell to 1-2. Our Lady of Mercy: The Bobcats fell 49-21 to Temple in a nonregion game.
